If your self-image has to be defined by the car you drive, then you need counseling a lot more than you need a car.
Form that follows function is never ugly. The Prius looks the way it does because of aerodynamics. What's ugly is the square box design that most old fashioned cars have.
When people have something they don't like but don't have any facts or the facts they do have are easily debunked, they sometimes resort to name-calling. In the sixties it would have been called "commie" but since the collapse of the Soviet Union people are less uptight about communism. Racial and ethnic slurs aren't socially acceptable, so some other unpopular group gets used instead.
The Prius is a highly reliable, low maintenance, roomy, great looking, and fun to drive car. My 2004 Prius has cost just 12 cents per mile for dealer maintenance, tires, and fuel combined over the 120,000 miles I've driven it so far. One of the best cars I've ever owned.
