The Avalon is a much larger sedan. You're grandma is going to find it more comfortable too, if you know what I mean. The Camry is just you're average family sedan. The Camry is cheaper too and gets better gas mileage. There are many more Camry's so if something ever went wrong you would find parts a lot easier and anybody would be able to fix it but either way, they are both ridiculously reliable so that shouldn't matter. If you are cross shopping these cars and nothing else, it'll come down to cost, size, and just the feel of driving them.
