What's a fair cost to get a catalytic converter replaced on a 2003 Toyota Corolla?
My check engine light came on the other day. Turned out to be from some sensor having to do with the catalytic converter. The Toyota dealer ran some tests and says I need a new one. They want $1600 to replace it. I couldn't believe it. Is this a reasonable price?
The parts geek, just a random website i found, has one in the low three hundreds. If you are sure this is your cars issues, you do have the option of buying the part yourself and then paying someone to install it.

aftermarket cat about 200 dollars,,,dealer with "genuine" toyo parts well you see,,,reasonable?? its what they charge,,,id shop around if i was you,,,muffler shops will cost 400 or so,,
That's worth a second opinion. It is very rare for a catalyst to fail after 8 years (in fact, there is a federally mandated 96 month 80K mile warranty on catalytic converters) but I could believe there is a sensor integral with it that is bad.
Toyota converters are exceptionally good. The stainless steel lasts forever and they perform very well. Aftermarket converters too often don't do the job - see the first source.
