yes. the ecu, if damaged and still capable, will go to "fail-safe" mode. limited function and ability effecting performance and mileage.
[ EDIT- i should add that a bad ecu will not cause overheat conditions within the distributor. that is typically a ground or over resistance(in need of tune up) issue. if you have replced the ignitior, it needs insulator grease applied to the underside. if it's wall mounted, insulation is not an issue.]
