I have ALWAYS been a fan of the tacoma's! Owned a 97, 2000, and 2004. I have worked on all of the body styles and years. The biggest item sadly is still going to be rust. even though all the recalls has been on '96 through 04 we are seeing a lot of rust on the 05 through 10 models. Now hopefully Toyota will announce something on those to but until then always look under a tacoma to see the condition of the frame.
Tire wear is also something I see with these trucks. People get the very soft street tires and they tend to wear more easily with the suspension being set up for hauling things. Simply have your rotations/balances/alignments done and you should be fine though.
Other than that for a truck I love them the interior is spacious without making the truck way to big in my opinion. They'll haul almost anything that'll fit in the back and pull most small and some mid sized boats and campers.
Working on these trucks everyday and having fixed a little of everything on them they seem over all not to have any major issues across the board. So I would definitely say with proper maintenance that you'd be set to receive the normal Toyota 200K+ mileage experience. And hopefully welcome to the Taco Family : )
And since the mpg is model and driver specific I'd use this to get your ballpark figure
