The "ECT" function on Toyota's stands for Electronic Controlled Transmission. The main function of this feature is to change the "performance" of the vehicle. It does this by using a different set of "shift points". Meaning that when engaged this system causes the engine to stay in lower gears for longer to help accellerate faster or have increased torque. This does not give you any more HP it simply applies it in a sportier way. While this system does not cause damage to the engine, the engine was designed to work efficiently either with it engaged or not. The way we drive at times with sportier shifting can cause issues : )
