Default ignition timing question, 95 toyota 4runner 3.0 V-6, 2 wheel drive?
i recently had a valve job done on my 4runner after 250k miles. i went and had it smog checked and the timing was 24 degrees BTDC and it wouldnt pass smog. the timing was brought back to 10 degrees BTDC to pass smog. now it seems like i get a slight hesitation from a standing start. my question is, is it ok to advance the timing to get more power, or will it harm the engine if i do? will i get better gas mileage with the timing slightly advanced, and if so, how many degrees can i safely advance the timing. any info will be much appreciated. thanks.

you need to correct the timing marks . looks like your timing belt is offset not aligned on the cams /crank

you wont improve or hurt anything doing that. it has an anti knock sensor and the ecu will retard it back (dynamically anyway). just get worse performance and mileage.































assuming the cams/crank is indexed & vacuum hoses are correct, you know you have to jump connectors to set timing?
