Kenny's right. Used Japanese transmission is the way to go. Do a search for Toyota A540E. If you can find one, you can probably get it swapped for no more than $900 parts and labor included. Hre's example of a place that has it:

If you can do it yourself, the transmission is $475. Definitely worth the swap. Also, find a good, honest mechanic that can look at it before you do anything. Transmission shops are the most expensive to work with from my experience. A regular mechanic might do the work for 50-70% of what a tranny shop quotes you. Just take it to a mechanic who works on Japanese cars. They won't tell you that the car costs more to repair because it's an import. Quite the contrary with your Camry. It is cheaper to repair than a domestic car.
