- Anyone on here have one
I have two, a 2001 that my wife drives and a 2004 that I drive. Both have be very reliable and trouble free.
- Does it need regular servicing
Well, yes, it's a car. Every 5,000 miles (10,000 in the 2010 and later) you change the engine oil and filter and do the visual inspections of the usual items.
Every 15,000-20,000 miles you change the cabin and engine air filters.
Every 40,000 miles you drain and fill the transaxle.
Every 100,000 miles you change the spark plugs and coolant.
- After its three year warranty, would you spend more on it or the same
The same. There really is very little maintenance required. To get an idea, the 2004 has cost 12 cents per mile for dealer maintenance, tires, and fuel combined over the 125,000 trouble-free miles I've driven it so far. The 2001 is similar but I don't have the exact numbers because my wife doesn't keep a logbook. If you are into DIY, the Prius is actually quite easy to service.
Toyota has removed many of the parts of a conventional car and replaced them with more reliable electronics and has simplified others. For instance the Prius doesn't have: an alternator, a starter motor, a serpentine belt (2010+ only), a clutch or fluid coupling. In addition the automatic transmission with it's hundreds of parts has been replaced by a simple planetary gear system similar to a differential.
Note that based on the high owner satisfaction ratings, my good experiences do not appear to be unique.
