#1 cause is an EGR issue. next on the list is the ECU. and you don't wanna go there. so,,,,
since the check engine light came on it has stored a code. even if it went out.
i would pull codes. issue is obviously intermittent.
you don't need a scanner tool for this. you just make the check engine light blink.

FYI,
per manual, not all codes prompt a check engine light. so there maybe more than one code stored. you may want to pull the EFI 15 amp main fuse for 30secs, key off first. that will clear all codes. then start the vehicle and let it malfunction again. then pull codes. this will eliminate stored codes that aren't relative, that have been addressed, but not cleared. the SST tool needed for diagnostics is just a jumper wire. so make one. 6" of wire w/two alligator clips is all you need. and your keys..........
