2wd and transfer case?

my friend has a small 2wd 5 speed pick up. he said he installed a 2wd transfer case that has a lo and a hi. he did this to get low rpms on the freeway and ride trails better. is this possible and if so is it worth it? he says hes cruising at about 1300 rpms goin 75 mph on the freeway. also would this have the same effect if he installed larger tires.

its possible if he put in a 4wd transfer case and didn't install the front axel. so he is running in 2wd. its better to run larger tires and cheaper.

That low in the power band he must be using a boatload of fuel. That is not an efficient cruise RPM.

Transfer cases have a 1:1 straight through ratio for high-range and a 2.28:1 or 2.57:1 (if it's a Toyota case) ratio for low-range. They do not have an overdrive ratio. He may have an overdrive box installed instead. They require some modification and drive shaft shortening. If you have a 4-speed manual transmission, you could benefit from a higher overdrive gear but it'd likely be easier just to swap in a 5-speed manual. The overdrive in the 5-speed is plenty tall...I could never see a reason to go with a higher ratio than that.
