Default Brake warning light on continuously Toyota MR2?
Hi, I have a 1996 Jap import MR2 T-Bar non turbo. Last week the brake warning light started to come on whilst accelerating and braking then would go off. Since it first started doing that it has steadily started to come on more often until today when it was on continuously. I have not noticed any change in the brakes and the car brakes very well as normal. Any idea what it might be before I take it to a Toyota garage? Also, where is the brake fluid container on an MR2? Could it be simply warning me of a low level of brake fluid?

Highly likely to be low brake fluid. It will be in the front boot, or possibly under a flap on the driver's side of the dash. (But I reckon the front boot, behind a trim) Be sure to check other things though, it might mean your brake pads are wearing thin, or you have a fluid leak.

There are no brake wear indicators fitted to the discs/pads so the problem lies with either the fluid level or the handbrake microswitch. Next time it comes on try pushing down on the handbrake (or left/ right) to see if it goes off.

Low brake fluid level. As you accelerate and brake the float measuring the level is moved up and down by the fluid sloshing around in the reservoir. It just needs topping up. It has been getting worse as the fluid level drops as the brakes wear.















The fluid level should be checked weekly. The warning system is good but should never be relied on which is why the reservoir has low and high marks and is translucent to allow easy checking.















Sorry don't know where it is but once you find it how about checking the oil and coolant too!
