You can drive it as long as you want to. Prius taxis have probably racked up the most miles so far. In Australia, one Prius in the taxi fleet had 340,000 miles on it (on its original battery pack). Another has 218,000 miles on it.
Does it even need a new battery (other than the small 12V auxiliary battery which is due for replacement)? Note that if the 12V battery is weak it can make it appear that there is a problem with the large battery. You might want to join one of the Yahoo Prius groups for additional information.
There have been very few 2004+ Prius that have required a new battery. I don't expect to have to replace the battery in my 2004 for many years.
It should last a long time. My 2002 (first generation and not nearly as refined as your second generation) turned over 150K miles yesterday with no repairs except replacing cracked windshields. The intra-company mail man at work uses a 2010 Prius for his 1500 miles a week (500 miles a day three times a week) route. It has only 80K miles on it but he expects to get 400K miles before it is time to retire it, and I think that is reasonable.
