No venzas are big and ugly
I personally drive a 2005 toyota matrix xr and i love it. It is a smaller sporty hatchback that also gets good gas mileage.
It makes for a good first car since it is light and small, that makes it easy to handle and easy to park. Plus it has lots of space since it is a hatchback.
I would suggest though, not getting an xr or getting a newer xrs. My XR is a little bit jerky on the throttle if you are not used to it (so that is not good to have for a new driver but is no big deal) Also the xr has lots of road noise. It is fun for town, but on the highway the noise is a real pain sometimes.
Whatever you get, make it not a venza.
PS. if you dont want a hatch, the corolla is the closet match to the matrix, but i recommend a hatch
