I have a 2007 with the smaller, 1.5L gasoline engine. It does very nicely on hills but if the climb is long enough for the traction battery to reach minimum charge, then the electric drive stops assisting and the car becomes more lethargic. There's no worry about not making it--it's just slower.
The current-generation has a larger, 1.8L gasoline engine that should provide more power once the electric drive runs out.
