Where is the check/fill plug located on a 2005 Toyota Highlander front differential?

I had my car in for a 30,000 mile checkup (at 120000 miles) and was told that it had a front differential leak. In checking it out it turned out to be only a very slight leak. My first thought was to get it fixed until I was told what it would cost (over $1700). Would it be possible to just top off the differential's reservoir, at least until it gets appreciably worse or I decide to trade it in? Where is the fill/check plug located on the front differential? Pardon my ignorance but is the front differntial filled through the transfer case? (this is the black box with a white label with [92......] printed on it and visible from the underside of the car).

First off, you are definitely in the wrong place for these types of problems. Its always a good place to go to check your vehicle out, however they can really scare you with a large repair bill when a local transmission specialty shop could potentially repair the vehicle instead of replacing it. It is at least worth in my opinion the inspection fee for a shop to check it out. Call ahead of time and be sure and confirm the shop does the types of repairs you're wanting performed. There is a drain plug and a location called the number one plug and gasket, check the oil level is within 0 - 5 mm down from the lowest end of the hole for No.1 plug.

But all in all, it would be very easy for a shop to inspect, if you don't want to repair, they'll fill it for you properly so you wont have to worry about and just pay the fee. There may be an additive they can add to the fluid. Best choice in my opinion. Good luck!
