I had that happen to my Toyota pick up before and I thought it was a bad dimmer switch so I took it to a dealer. It turns out that the low beams can burn out and they will still work on high beam. All I needed was to change the bulbs but since I had taken it to a dealer it wound up costing a lot more than if I would have done it myself. I thought it was odd that both lights went out at the same time but they said that it does happen and sometimes one light will go out and the driver does not notice it until they both are out. If by chance only one bulb is out it is still better to change them both at the same time.
