The mobile phone must be connected to the car by bluetooth before any hands free operation can happen. The method of doing this is explained in the handbook, but not very well. They assume that the owner is American and that they own a fully compatible phone. You may also need the phone's manual handy.
Make sure that the mobile phone's bluetooth is turned on and that you know the phone's "ID". The car's audio system will search for bluetooth devices within range (about 2 metres) and list them. Identify your phone and press the appropriate buttons to "pair" the device. If this is successful you'll be able to make and receive calls with the car's microphone and loudspeaker.
You may have to type in your phone's contact list by hand one at a time because the auto-import function does not work with most types of mobile used in the UK.
When you've successfully paired the phone, and got the most important entries from your contact list imported, it works very well.
