That's a great truck configuration. The 2.7L is a powerful, reliable and fuel efficient engine and the 5-speed has optimum durability and makes best use of the engine power.
It most-likely has manually-locking front hubs as well, which is optimum for durability and reliability of the 4wd system. If it does not, it has an automatic axle disconnect which is more complex--make sure to try out the operation.
The 2.7 and 3.4 Tacoma engines were not known for head gasket problems. The head gasket issues were mostly limited to the 3VZ-E 3.0 V-6 from the earlier trucks and 4runners.
Do make sure the engine timing belt has been addressed.
***Thanks Thomas. Wow--now I like the 2.7 even more! Ignore the timing belt reference.
That's one of my favorite configurations--it should be a great, main vehicle. With careful driving, you might be able to squeeze 25 mpg from it--there's probably no reason for a second car.
