Default is this normal for a 1997 toyota corolla?
when it is very cold outside the engine makes big rattling noises but after it heats up it calms down a little but it still rattles sometimes when accelerating? is it just age causing this? or it could be a mechanical problem? any ideas?















it has almost 95,000 miles

It's age, but it could be something you could fix by tightening up a few bolts. It's probably happening when you are driving too, but you might not notice.































When the engine is cold, try jacking up the car (place it on jack stands to be safe) and gently hit a few things under the car to see if that is what is causing the noise. If you find the clanging sounds (most likely exhaust) you can either tighten up bolts (might have to replace hangers if it's the exhaust).































You can also take a look at the motor mounts (where the motor mounts to the chassis). If they are work, this could be the noise you are hearing.

It might be worn pistons. When cold the pistons (aluminum) shrink and the clearance increases. You may have some piston slap when cold and under hard acceleration. When the pistons warm up they expand and tend to fill the clearance more. It could also be a loose front main bearing.

not normal. i own a 1996 corolla with over 170k and live where it gets to be -35c and mine has never done that.

It could be a loose heat shield or the pistons and the noise normally subsides when the motor is hot. What kind of mileage does it have?

Sounds like the heat shield sare loose. That's because the RPMs are higher so it rattles. When your car starts in the morning, it idles at a higher RPM than when it's already warmed up.
