1999 Toyota Tacoma question?

Ok, so here's the deal. I replaced my factory stereo a few months back by simply: removing temp control knobs and panel and unscrewing that entire center dash. Down on the bottom left corner, there is a piece of plastic which is supposed to fit into a whole in the previously removed center dash. I can't seem to fit it down there and snap it in anymore. So, I'd like to remove the bottom dash (the one with two cigarette lighters) in order to get better access. Only problem is, I can't seem to get the plastic caps off to reveal the screws for that portion of dash. I tried removing one with two flat headed screw drivers on either side but half of the cap broke off.

Sorry for my lengthy explanation, any suggestions are appreciated.

Ripping apart dash and door panels is a refined art. There is no easy answer other than when you have the experience to finesse it just right they come apart quite easily. Use the smallest tool possible and never yank things, pull gradually. Also the cigarette lighters are a screw together assembly, sometimes they need to be unscrewed in order to get apart the panels. The whole interior of the lighter part unscrews from a base that wraps around it.

Those clips are simple removed by pushing in the center portion of the clip in. Once its popped in then it will allow you to pull it out. And to put it back in you need pull it out and once you insert it back into it respective position you push the center portion to its original position
