I assume you mean the large hybrid battery rather than the smaller 12 volt aux battery. The hybrid system will not operate without the battery. For one thing, the hybrid battery starts the engine. For another, the entire hybrid system is based on a working battery.
I don't recommend working with the battery or the battery wiring unless you are experienced with high voltages - the battery nominal voltage is 273 volts if memory serves me well. There is a jumper plug to remove when the battery is being disconnected, but failing to do that puts an amazing amount of flash potential at you fingertips. Besides the high DC voltage that can deliver a dangerous (potentially fatal) shock, the battery can make impressive fireballs, I'm sure.
