valvetrain? my brother has this EXACT vehicle. He has the 1996 taco, the 2.7, the 5speed, but his truck is 4x4. He also has 275k miles. I don't think he has any tapping or anything.
To actually help you..lol.. It sounds like an oil problem. It sounds like you have noisy/tapping lifters. This is a very common problem with all types of engines.
hmm. Well, I was just googleing this issue and it seems to be a big problem. People aren't describing it exactly the same as you, but kinda close. Most of the trucks had this problem within 20k miles though.
I think yours is something different.
If you can respond, I have a few questions to ask that will help.
When you step on the throttle, does the tapping go AWAY, or just get faster until you can't hear it?
How have your oil changes been?
Is it only on cold mornings, or all the time no matter what?
