They are cool cars, as far as first cars... well I dont know. The engines are good. But a good first car or any car for that matter is the one you can afford to fix. Those early MR2s are getting rare and with the mid-engine layout, they are a royal pain to work on, so repair shops are going to charge you way more in labor. Plus watch out for your insurance, you need to check with your agent and tell them what cars you are looking at. They will give you the rates which may be a big determining factor in your purchase.
If everything is good, you have the money, and the car is in great shape, you will have fun with MR2s. My brother had the mid 90's twin turbo version and it was a blast to drive. The 80's supercharged one is the one to get from that era. Only 150 hp but a real light snappy car. Very rare to find in good shape.
