1999 Toyota 4runner 4wd?

I am looking into getting a 99 4runner 4wd and i was wondering what the button on the 4wd shifting nob was and what it does.

The button is to shift into 4wd "high". Just push in the button - it catches down and that is 4wd (as soon as the gears mesh). Push it again and it pops out - back to 2wd.

to go into 4wd "LOW" range you have to move the lever. In that time frame i think Toyota had both button and lever shifts (lever shift for 4 hi) and also both the manual free wheeling hubs - or the A.D.D. - Automatic Diff Disconnect. I think the button shifts were all A.D.D. (no free wheeling/locking hubs). A locking rear diff was optional. It is operated by a button on the dash. I don't think (?) any of these trucks had a center differential. So frt and rear props turn at same speed.

The button engages full-time 4wd with an open center differential, similar to all-wheel drive. It can be used on pavement without binding.

To engage 4-hi (center differential locked), you need to move the shift lever into the 4-hi position. This is not suitable for pavement as it locks the front and rear drive shafts together but it offers better traction than the full-time 4wd button.
