Not sure what years yours is but I have replaced a trunk release cable on an 89 corolla and what happened was the cable was a bit frayed and ended up snapping right near the end linkage near the release lever. From my experience these cables always seem to break right near the end. I had a run another cable that followed this path: along the front drivers side, toward the drivers back seat, then along the foot of the backseat across to the passenger side, then up and along the back seat into the trunk, up through the trunks passages and then it hooks into the lock mechanism. Check your lock mechanism where the linkage connects to make sure you didn't just break a cheap 5 cent plastic tab and the cables linkage slipped out.
I found it simple to replace the cable. You will have to pull up the carpet on the drivers side to access the lever and insert the linkage of the cable and you may have to take out the bench of the back seat and pull up the carpet there and also along the bottom of the back seat, the back driver side, and the back passenger side to run the cable through. Just takes a little while to run the cable through, I took the front seat out to make it easier so it took me longer.
I have done this on 2 corollas and it sounds weird but I found I had an easier time running the cable when I ran it starting from the trunk and working my way into the car from there. Hope some or any of my info helps.
