I've got a 2007 Toyota Yaris hatchback. It seems to over-rev a lot...is this normal?

By over-rev, I mean that it seems as if it hasn't changed gears and seems to be wasting a lotta gas. For example, when I'm going 30-35, it'll get loud as if I'm flooring the gas petal, then when I get up to 40 or so, you can feel the gear change and you can feel the car/gas smooth out and it'll quiet down.

It's an automatic obviously, and has this really stupid transmission/gear setup where 3 is right next to D, so if you don't know, you could be driving in 3 instead of D. I'm sure I'm in D though, and it still happens, the constant reving.

Is something wrong with the transmission? Or is this just the result of an economy car?

the last question in your story is the answer for all your questions

the thing is - Yaris is a small engine. so once you put it to the floor, then it will do high revs all the time and it will take ages to switch to the next gear. it is the engine size and the engine technology.

always make sure the gear thing is on D and not 3rd - otherwise you may end-up overwarming the engine. and phlease make sure you don't put it totally to flow - do it like 2/3 of a pedal move. this will allow car to move at lower than max revs

make sure you dont have constant revs as well
