EDIT, (everything)
glad i asked for engine option. ty for the info on lpg.
i have no experience in diagnosing lpg conversions. not that it is your issue. but it is in play here. sorry mate. none of the tech info i gave was applicable. i've no idea how that would effect on board diagnostics on this platform. timing is way different for lpg apps. prolly over 10 degrees over oem advance or more due to the slow flame front w/lpg. different induction system as well. 2 or 3 stage decompression.
i know you know better than to just try and rev this. you may have an lpg leak. or some kinda depressurization issue.
i connected some of the dots, realizing you were down under. but not your weather. you're in summer! so my comment about 4x4 gear was relative to auto lock, ADD, and driving w/it engaged. xfer case and it's management may have been in play prompting ecu limp mode (not necessarily *transmission* issues). if it wasn't engaged at the time. it likely is not relative. initially "BANG" was not enough info to eliminate that possibility.
it does sound like the ecu is in limp mode though. which would explain the 2000rpm limit. but the cause of why that happened on an lpg conversion, i've no idea
my suggestion is to delete this Q and re-post the question and include "lpg conversion" in the title. and put it in the "maintenance and repairs" board. not "toyota". there are some very savvy ppl here that can help you with this.
DO include the engine option you have. maybe the manufacturer of the kit installed. sure lpg ppl will have other Q's as well.
