Default Why are good cars so ugly/boring?

My parents have a 2001 Toyota corolla that they let me drive. (I'm the only person who ever uses it so basically it's mine)

It gets awesome gas mileage, and it's never once broken down. We haven't had any problems with it (except the CV joints, the warped brakes, the door handles break everyday, the dash lights have issues, the window motors don't work anymore, and the keyholes are so worn they don't always cooperate with the keys, but that's normal for a car with 140,000 miles right?)

Anyways, people say you can't get any car more reliable than a Toyota, which is true I guess, but why are they so UGLY??!? I mean, my corolla looks like a 6 year old designed it. It's sssooooo boring and ugly, but reliable!

But if you look at a cool car (like a VW golf GTI, or something) they suck!!! They always break down and have electrical issues and EXPENSIVE repairs!!

Can't they just make a car that looks like a VW or something that has the reliability of a Toyota??

I couldn't agree with you more. Toyota's are lacking on the style. But they are damn near indestructible. VW's are junk but look good. I don't no if Toyota will ever get there act together and make a good looking car.

I went a whole another route. I bought a 2013 Honda Civic SI. It's as reliable as a Toyota, looks as good as the VW. It's fast as hell to. I had it up to 130 mph and still had another gear to go. It's a 6 speed manual. If your looking for a fun reliable car. The Civic SI is definitely worth a look.

Toyota and its subsidiaries Lexus and Scion have made tons of cool cars. You just have to look for them.

When your Toyota was new, it was in the showroom next to the Celica. The Celica of previous years had the reputation of being a chick car, but the last ones had powerful VVTi engines and six speed manual transmissions. Not quite as good as a Prelude, but much better looking and way better than the aging Integra GS-R or the new RSX. Reliability was typical Toyota, but you have to remember that any sports car is going to get abused more than a typical grocery getter.

Toyota went boring for a while after the Celica ended, but it is back to cool with the Scion FR-S. Nobody else other than Mazda and Subaru (with its identical BRZ) offers an economical RWD four cylinder sports car with emphasis on driver experience rather than technology.

Then there is Lexus. Of course, the IS line of cars have been alternatives to the 3 Series and C Class for a long while, and the SC and now RC coupes have been fun diversions in the Lexus lineup for over two decades now.

Because flashy cars are not really all that welcome in the market demographic Toyota is shooting for. You can be sure they spent a small fortune researching features their potential buyers liked, and what you see is what those potential buyers liked. Style is a very individual thing; I would probably find the styles you like to be garish and ugly. I had a Lotus Europa for 6 years when I was young but I think the Golf GTi is about as stylish as a 1955 Cadillac. Too gimmicky... they might as well have put fins on it.
