Can you make a 5 speed Toyota automatic?

Default Can you make a 5 speed Toyota automatic?

I just got offered a 92 Toyota 4x4 ext cab 5 speed to trade for my Chevy. I don't really know how to drive a 5 speed and i want free hands. I can't pass this offer up its a Toyota! Is it possible to make is an automatic and if so how much would that cost??

A 1992? Probably cost more than the price of the vehicle. Unless you are missing an arm or a leg, anyone can learn to drive a stick. And once you get good at it, it's rare that you need your hands free. You learn to accommodate it.































I've been driving for 19 years. I had an auto for 2 years in the 80s, and bought one when I turned 50. After 3 months, I was so bored with it I gave it to my kid and bought a car with a 6 speed. Learn to drive a stick. IT makes you a better driver and it's more fun.

Stick as the others have mentioned can be fun unless you are in a lot of stop and go traffic. Yes you can change a manual transmission to automatic. The least costly way would be contact a junk yard to see if they have a used one, if lucky already out of the car. It will take a mechanic to replace. You will not be able to do it since you don't know if it can be done. It may be cheaper to sell it and but a car with automatic. Since it is pretty old car.

You can change it but it's a bit of work. The 5-speed really is the best transmission in those trucks to make the best use of the available power. I really like having a manual trans on the 4wd--if the battery gets too low, you can roll-start it.































I think driving with a manual transmission is one of the best parts of driving. That's a great truck to learn on. If you have someone who can coach you, that's great, or you can teach yourself. I really recommend learning to "row through the gears". It makes you a much more versatile driver and it's really the preferred transmission for those trucks.

Yep. It will cost some bank. I can not imagine why anyone would replace a standard transmission with an auto. My son has replaced autos twice with standard transmissions. You need different foot pedals, shifter, probably wiring harness, maybe cut or extend the drive shaft or get a new one, and probably some other things that I forgot about. It is quite an undertaking and probably not worth it unless you need/want the experience.

to add, in support,















the manual trans and manual 4x4-hub optioned trucks in this era are more coveted than the auto configs. there are a lot of both configs out there. for uner 2000 bucks.















you could sell this and get the auto config and have money left over. but i do not suggest you get an auto trans option along with the *auto locking hubs* iffin you're not mechanically inclined. the auto lock system is operated pneumatically on those. cost more to repair iffin something goes wrong. and with the manual locking hubs, there are less parts to deal with and go wrong. both optioned platforms(hub-4x4 wise/manual or auto) require periodic maint. especially if 4x4 mode is not used annually.

learning to drive a manual trans vehicle. self teaching methode with no harm to vehicle.















it's all about power to weight.















flat lot, engine running, in gear, no throttle action at all,















let clutch out slowly till the vehicle moves w/o stalling the engine. repeat till you can do it. then add just a wee bit of throttle to accellerate a little faster. once that's done, go to a slight incline and do it all over again. then progress to the next gear.















once done, w/o even knowing it, you will have mastered a clutch system. and there will be no back seat advice or harm to the engine/clutch. even if it dies repeatadly till you get it right.
