Default Prius vs Rav 4?

I'm moving to AZ from SC. My Corolla is too small for my 'stuff' and my cats. I've tested both the Prius and the Rav 4. The Rav is definitely the better vehicle for the journey to AZ with the cats, but obviously I need to consider which one will be better for general getting around once there. Does anyone out there have strong feelings about either one? I am a bit worried about the battery issue in the Prius.....?

Are you deciding which car to buy? Both are good cars. Don't worry about the batteries in the Prius - they will go for a long-long time, at least 150,000 miles. The Rav 4 is very dependable but the Prius is just about the most dependable car on the road (probably because it is so gutless). I currently own a 6 year old Escape hybrid which I am very happy with but will maybe get a plug-in Prius V when they come out in a year or so.

Priuses are for people who think they're saving the planet but ain't, rav 4's are a bit clunky at low speeds, the prius doesn't do high speeds and will get you to your location a decade late.

Go for a turbo diesel estate.

I agree with both of the last two answers. However, to answer your question. The RAV4 is a great around town vehicle. If you like it on long trips, you'll love it around town.

For general getting around a second or third generation Prius is a good choice. The concerns about the battery and the performance are unfounded - the hybrid battery will last longer than an average automatic transmission or clutch, which are in the same price range. The 0-60 time is a bit quicker than the Delorean DMC-12 and is essentially identical to the Corolla, and is the same as the 1999 Rav4. The 2013 Rav4 Limited is 2 seconds quicker at 8 seconds. The top speed of the Prius is electronically limited to 112 mph.

A diesel is a seriously lousy substitute for a Prius. Compare 30 mpg in town with the VW Jetta TDi to 50 in town for the Prius. The RAV4 does almost that well. That is 40% poorer fuel economy for the TDi. Would a TDi owner think 18 mpg (40% less than 30) around town was competitive? The Prius haters have so much to learn.
