UGLY. Don't buy a Toyota. You are paying way to much for a cheaply made car.

If you want a vehicle in the same class check out the Mercury Mountaineer. Even better check out the new Ford Edge. Those things are hot!

0-60 quicker than a BMW X5!!!

I like the new Highlanders better than the older ones. They're more manly-looking and a little bigger. I think Toyota's upsized all their SUV-like cars: RAV4, 4Runner, and Highlander at least. (Sequoia's big enough already, probably.) Historically, you can't go wrong: they some of have the highest reliability ratings I've ever seen.

However, for me personally, Highlanders are generally kind of a girly-looking car. I was thinking of buying one and my wife was pushing me to buy it but ultimately, I didn't want something girly, so I got a 4Runner instead.

Either way, you can't go wrong with a Toyota - top of the ratings every year. As far as the cars other people mentioned:

Mercury Mountaineer: historical reliability is mixed, reliability prediction for a new one is the all black circle (the worst)

Ford Edge: new model (beware of the first year!), but based on the Mazda 6 frame, which is at least halfway decent. It's more stylish looking than the Highlander, obviously trying to copy the Murano - definitely go with the Highlander. A couple years down the road, you'll thank me.

I work at a Toyota dealership in FL so I guess I'm biased.

The 08 Highlander is definitely bigger as all our SUV lineup, due to customer demand. Toyota is #1 in consumer reliablity reports according to JD Power & Assoc.
