Default 86 22R, 2WD, W55 tranny missing 1st & 2nd gear - help

1st & 2nd don't work but don't know why.
I'm not a xmission mechanic.

I have a very limited budget but it's my only transportation.
What's the least expensive way to go; get it repaired or
replace it with a new or used one?

What are the ballpark estimates?
I live in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Thanks for any help,

bilm

take it apart to see if a rebuild kit will work. they're not horrendously
expensive and bonehead simple.

more info ...

Wikipedia says the W55 was made only for the 22RE(EFI) but mine
has a carb. The C/TR/A/TM code on the firewall plate definitely
shows W55 (3B2 VN41 F302 W55).

It's the 5 speed version.
Rear wheel drive (2WD).

Symptoms: With engine running in neutral I can put it in 1st or
2nd without the clutch, wiggle it around, and it's the same as
being in neutral. Same with engine off. All the other forward
gears and reverse work fine.

It's the original transmission and the engine has 233K miles.

Suspect the shift fork roll pin let go.
Used tranny should be easy to find and reasonable. Labour to take it
apart and check is more expensive, even if the required part to repair
is dirt cheap.

Bummer. There is a fork-like bar that straddles a gear shift pin
for the lower hears, and a second pin (if I recall correctly) for
the higher gears. The first pin might have come lose or broken.
The work involved in replacing it is tedious and time-consuming.

Yeah. I'm not a mechanic, but I agree. :-) The transmission is
similar to the tractor here at the ranch, and the same thing
happened to the tractor.

At 90 dollars an hour, a used trans would indeed be less if the
person doing the labor is being paid.

OK. Given the 2 options, rebuild it or replace it with a used
one, the 2nd seems the way to go. We have maybe a dozen
wrecking (auto recycling) yards here in the East Bay.
So wish me luck.

I've never done this before so if you have any tips on what to
look for other than checking the C/TR/A/TM code on firewall
plate for the rights specs, please let me know.

Thanks Desertphile, clare and 'someone' for your replies and
advice.

Same tranny in Celica rear wheel drive vehicles with R series
engines.
There are some with different gear ratios that will also bolt right
in.
W56 and W54, I believe, have different ratio spread. The "w" series is
the early aluminum body transmission that is NOT a split case, and has
a removeable bell housing. It's good for something like 200+ HP.
